The Orchard Publishing

COMPANY OVERVIEW

Sony Music Publishing is the world’s No. 1 music publishing company with a network of 38 offices across the globe.

Headquartered in New York, the company owns or administers iconic music catalogs including those from Jobete/Motown, Famous Music, Leiber & Stoller and Mijac Music. It became a solely-owned Sony company in 2016.

With its songwriter-first mission, Sony/ATV Music Publishing provides best-in-class services on a global scale to its songwriters and catalogs while also leading the industry with its high-level synchronization operation and production music businesses, Extreme Music and EMI Production Music.

COMPANY HISTORY

Sony/ATV Music Publishing can trace its history back to 1955 when British-based businessman and impresario Lew Grade founded Associated Television (ATV). In 1957 ATV acquired Pye Records, at the time one of the three major record companies in the U.K. alongside EMI and Decca Records.

Out of the ATV acquisition ATV Music Publishing was then created to exploit the catalog of songs written by artists on the Pye Records label and for the themes to Independent Television Corporation and ATV programs. Under Grade, ATV Music Publishing’s acquisitions included in 1968 Northern Songs, which had been set up five years earlier to look after songs written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

The ATV song catalog, including Northern Songs, was eventually acquired in 1985 by Michael Jackson and was then merged in October 1995 with Sony Music Publishing to form Sony/ATV Music Publishing. It became a solely-owned Sony company in 2016. Since 2012 Sony/ATV has administered EMI Music Publishing, making it the world’s leading music publisher based on market share. In November 2018 EMI became 100% wholly owned by Sony.

JON PLATT

Jon Platt is Chairman & CEO of Sony/ATV Music Publishing, the number one global music publisher. Since his appointment in April 2019, Platt’s inclusive leadership style has reshaped the corporate culture and created a powerful example for the music industry.

Under Platt’s watch, Sony/ATV has significantly increased representation by women on the company’s senior leadership team. He has also attracted key new signings and executive talent, as well as expanded opportunities available to songwriters. With a mantra to always put songwriters first, Sony/ATV is setting the standard on how songwriters are paid and was the first music publisher to expedite foreign royalty payments.

Culturally, Platt is acknowledged for his influence as a creative executive. He is widely credited for bringing hip-hop music to dominance in the music publishing industry by elevating how R&B/hip-hop artists are respected and compensated as songwriters. Throughout his career, he has signed and collaborated with prominent songwriters including Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Drake, Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Rihanna and Usher.

Platt previously served as Chairman & CEO of Warner Chappell and led the company’s turnaround. Platt also worked for 17 years at EMI Music Publishing. He has received numerous honors including Billboard’s "Power 100", SESAC’s "Visionary Award", Morehouse College’s "Candle Award" and City of Hope’s prestigious "Spirit of Life" award. In 2005, he launched the Big Jon Platt Scholarship Program for high school students from his hometown of Denver attending college.

D.I.O. Music/D.I.O. Productions Joins The Team and Looking to Take All Endeavors With his Producer Nachoswave.

D.I.O. is a Rap/R&B artist born in New Jersey but spent his childhood back and forth from the Bronx to Atlantic City. He is currently based in Tampa, FL.

At an early age, D.I.O. became a huge fan of hip-hop through his aunt Liz.

“All she used to play was Eminem, Biggie, Nas, & Fab. I couldn’t believe these guys were that good.”

D.I.O. also likes to show his melody and song writing side on R&B tracks. His albums are always mixed with different sounds.

“I’m a huge fan of artists that can do more than just rap or sing because managing both at a high level is such a challenge. Drake of course is the greatest at it and opened the door for a lot of artists to just take risks and be themselves.”

D.I.O. will continue to grow and show there’s more sounds he has in store.

D.I.O. favorite rappers are Drake, Lil Wayne, J.Cole & Kendrick Lamar.

Those guys are the reason D.I.O. decided to become an artist.
